I agree that the many of the ideas championed by the web 2.0 movement have origins in even the very earliest days of the internet; the very 1st web browser was read/write.
You say “is just a market changing it self with the increased usage by the consumers” and you are right, this the very core value of web 2.0; to encourage and nature mass participation. The difference now is the barriers to such participation are greatly lowered. Anyone can become creator, editor and distributor.

its not really that confusing.
Just create standard compliant websites that are well designed and follow some sort of grid.
Take advantage of the tools that are available to you - CSS, Flash, RSS, CMS, XHTML. ect ect ect.
Make clean code, follow a nice color palate, avoid silly footer images telling us what browser to use. ect ect.

knowing how to come up with great design that works really well.
understanding the business and how design can add value to online/offline presence.
utilizing the right tool to get your vision materialized and not get so caught up in what the tools can do for you.

all valuable viewpoints.
I agree with research, but it can be a double edged sword when the going gets rough.
I've seen cases where research has lead to too much "borrowing"... but i suppose that's where vision comes in.

Learn After Effects.
I'm sure there's a lot of great designers who wish they hadn't stopped at photoshop and flash.
And once you immerse yourself in the flow of work, it gets harder and harder to take time to learn new software.
