Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 offers a free trail from their site for OS X. Have you tried this?
Personally I am pricing out video software myself. I find that I am drawn toward final cut studio as the ultimate solution but do not want to shell out the cash with mac switching over to different chips.
I also question if my system will be fast enough powerbook 800 mhz with 512 ram...
anyone know of a good source for cheap PB ram?

i got a 512MB stick at best buy for pretty cheap, right around $50.

sweet - sorry for the hi-jack...
back on track...
I downloaded free avid dv on saturday just for a tryout. It let me get through everything and then when i start the app it says...sorry not enough RAM...that nixed avid from my plans...due to annoyance [definitely user error]

After looking at the final cut express for $299 I think I'm sold. My skills are well below what this product offers and exponentially below what final cut studio offers. Right now I am using imovie and quicktime pro. Three years ago I was using adobe premiere and had ok skills for web video, but shit was so buggy on mac os 8.6 through 9.0 that you would just start feeling good about stuff and crashola...I think I will lay out the 299 for express and learn the software...when my skills dictate I can make the full studio purchase...

I saw it on sturday and will post the link when I get home...

ok thanks denvergreenbud

final cut express states: HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual PowerPC and 1GB of RAM
I will really be using this for web video so how badly will this limit me? I don't think at all, but I just want the braintrust to sound off.

Here is another thought. I have a copy of final cut pro 1.2, can I upgrade from this? I can't find any data saying that I can. In addition I would have to install classic. I want to avoid installing classic, yet if I could install, upgrade and then delete at a savings of $200 I would. Thoughts?

i'm not sure if it will run on your 800mhz powerbook but if it does, it will be quite slow

slow how...just in import, export, I can handel...but actual function?

my guess would be the rendering...

found a good review...it discusses the lack of 'animation or compositing' tools.

I stand corrected. There is no link on the Adobe site for a OS X Premeire trial. I was sure I saw one....I am usually pretty level headed....sorry.

That's an interesting article, it makes me think I should go with Final Cut Studio. It's looking like the budget may actually be able to fit it in.

Yes his site is chock full of good poop...
Wow I am leaning toward express...I want to spend as little as possible in learning the software. Seems that if I can extend the life of my current powerbook for 1 year I wait out the breaking in of intel chips, learn the software, and then upgrade to studio when I upgrade my computer.
