Ok, I think NT is the best forum on the web as far as functionality and usability.
does anyone have any other examples of really well done forums that break away from the standard forum or blog software?
Any examples no matter how obvious are appreciated.

pwahahahaha ... I'd post some nice forums but I'm laughing too much to reach my bookmarks folder

yeah, I think NT is clever and elegent. Every other forum I have experienced seems bulky, when you enter an new area, you have to wait for the whole page to reload, you have to scroll through long responses you dont care about.
So If NT is so bad, let me see some of the better ones? Im not being confrontational, Id really like to see what people think are the best forums out there.

yeah, i agree. nt is by far the best. it's the only forum i bother with mostly because all the others are so poorly designed and sluggish. i'd be really interested in seeing better ones, too.

Mine?!
http://www.determinedmoth.org/I think the reason there are none is that they are such hard work to build.

yeah, moth, yours is good.

Moth-
Did you build yours? It is really nice. Id like to talk you more about it if you have the time.Josh

(Mar 6 06, 08:52)So are they hard to maintain and manage, or just hard to build?
IS yours built with css? once it was finished, could it be reskined and and repurposed? or would it take just as much effort as starting from scratch? If I wanted to hire someone to build one like yours or NT, what are the skills im looking for? Is it PHP? SQL?
Id lilke to create a forumn that would allow users to create an account like yours.

moth,
definelty an excellent job!You would need to have design skills, and front-end and backend skills. css, php mysql.
I am working on something similar to this now, and i will say that there is a fine line between a forum that aworks and one that works well.

(Mar 6 06, 10:47)Ok, anyone have examples of good forums using software like this, or wordpress, or blogger?
Im looking for forums or blogs that use this software, but are designed to look different from your standard forum or blog.

phpBB is very popular forum software, if you visit their site you'll see loads of examples. Vbulletin is also popular but not free (i think)

(Mar 6 06, 09:33)Well, I used to host PHPBB forums on determinedmoth for a few years (http://www.phpbb.com/). I wanted my own because PHPBB is far more than I needed and I wanted to scale back.
Mine is CSS, but my skills stretch to a good tailor made job rather than a portable "product". That wasn't a goal when coding it. I could probably reskin it and tweek it for another site and it wouldn't take too long, but I dont think anyone else would make sense of it as it stands.
For your reference, it's PHP/MySQL based, and if you're seriously looking, I'd willingly take the job ;) Of course this would re-use code so it might be quicker and cheaper than hiring someone to copy it.
From scratch, it took me the best part of 3 months, part-time.

Agree with you UndoUndo. phpBB is a very good forum. But there is a bunch of sites out there that makes awful bad templates..
One of the best template I've seen must be http://www.absolutedesigner.com/… Nice and not too strong colors.
Clean and not too much graphic = short loading time.

the digg comments system does rock.
did kevin used to hang out on NT?
- danthon0
Kevin came on NT once upon a time (username KEVIN ROSE). He proved his identity easy enough and even plugged NT on his show, but he was torn to shreds and left crying.
