Dancer, I had problems a while ago.
I had to change my outgoing mail server back to my isp:
smtp.ntlworld.com
ntl had changed they're settings, which was causing the problem.
hope this helps.

It has to do with the blocking of mail relays to prevent spam zombies (no relation to me). Many large ISPs consider POP mail sends from any domain other than their own as a security breach. So da-fork is right on in directing you to change your outgoing mail server to your own ISP's address. MT support has a pretty consise list of outgoing mail server addresses and was albe to read me mine over the phone.

You shouldnt have to do that (sending through your ISP's SMTP server).. Its a pain when travelling, apart from other limitations.
Contact mt support and get them to sort it out so you can send through their SMTP server..could be an authentication problem.
Sometimes there are alternative ports available if any service provider is blocking the standard ports too.

hmmm.. doesnt look like mt is offering alternative ports (some providers do). You can also send using the SMTP server of one of your other email provider accounts, as long as you have a way to authenticate.
A decent ISP shouldnt block port 25 really...

First thing I tried was the MT port swap. no love there. I'd be curious to see if another SMTP server would work, but don't want to route my MT mail through my work servers. (a separation of church and state kinda thing) Agreed, this is a true pain in the ass..

what about routing the smtp through gmail?

gmail seems to use port 587
.Mac offers port 2525 as an alternative I think
