I'm currently listening to his album 'Illinois' which I believe is one of the albums in his project to record an album for each of the 50 US states.
It's an amazing album and the guy is hugely talented, but so far it's the only album I've heard by him. Has anyone else heard more? Are they all this good?

yeah I got hold of
'Greetings From Michigan - The Great Lake State'
which is good, not quite the album that 'illinois' is, but would you say that about the state? lol'Illinois' is really something though.

Michigan: quite a lot more mellow. Some like it, some don't.
I liked the more upbeat songs in Illinois at first (I must have listened to Chicago a hundred times) but recently have warmed up to the very beautiful sensibility of the quieter songs, especially after seeing him in show in New York last summer (which was amazingly beautiful).

I've really really tried to like Sufjan Stevens, I'm sorry but I just find his stuff by and large really boring.

I have yet to get Michigan - but Illinois and Seven Swans are both great albums. Seven Swans is much more stripped down, which I like. I also have 'A Sun Came' which is more experimental, definitely some good tracks, but a few of them are more experiment, not very listenable.

I think part of what I like about Illinois is that the songs are very simple in structure etc but the production is massive for what is essentially a folk record. Big string sections layered vocals, it comes together to create this massive sound.

andrew bird is cool.... I don't remember where, but I found Sufjan Steven's Christmas album free, three volumes of christmas music, 9 tracks each...
good stuff.

Horrible, boring, nothing but a novelty.

I got freaked out listening to the song on Illinoise about John Wayne Gasey.
I really liked it until I actually listened to the lyrics.

You have to have patience, there's some really beautiful stuff going on in his music.

im a big Sufjan Fan.
Amazon voted Illinoise the best album of 2005 .The michigan album is the closest to Illinoise, but illinoise is def. on another level lyrically i think.
a massive talent I believe.
but not for everyone.

I really like Seven Swans, but I love simplicity, hollowness.
For all the Sufjan fans, you should check out Sean Hayes out of Oakland. Been around longer than Sufjan, but his stuff is great, just put out a new album entitled "Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star".

his mellower songs are way better. tracks like "to be alone with you," "seven swans," "holland" and "dress looks nice on you" are fantastic.
i loved the michigan and seven swans albums.
