the power went out in my apartment last night. thismorning my computer will not start. it was plugged into a surge protector, everything else plugged into the same strip works fine. i tried plugging the computer into a different socket, no dice.
any advice? or is it time to go shopping?

A similar thing has happened to me once. I'm guessing that either your power supply or mobo is shot. The HD, video card, peripherals, etc.. should probably be ok. Might be a good excuse to piece together a new machine.

it is most likely the power supply.

pour some tussin on it

probably blew your power supply...getting a new one isn't a big deal, as long as you get one with the same voltage as your old one.

Just remembered..someone once told me about popping the internal battery out of the motherboard (its like a big watch battery) so it resets itself or something. I've never done that one before but may be worth a shot.

you should really only do that if you ruin your BIOS settings...it's totally safe if you want to try it, though...

It's probably your powersupply.
Same thing happened to me a few summers ago, whereby a lightning storm killed my "computer," which was foolishly not protected by a surge protector.
If you have another computer in your house, you could try temporarily hooking the power supply (if it's specifications has enough power for your motherboard) to your motherboard, and booting it up to see if everything else is working.
That way, you don't buy a powersupply for nothing if everything else if friend too.
- jmteow0
er... I meant "everything else is fried too."
Not "everything if friend too."
On a related note, surge protectors definitely have a threshold when it comes to protecting against power surges.
If you are highly concerned about this, you may consider installing a two-tier power protection system.

soak it in 2 parts water 1 part vinegar overnight. be sure to use white vinegar that other stuff will ruin your machine.
