I got out, too, for the most part - after 7 years of straight arch school! Thta's 4 at UF and 3 at UCLA.
Thankfully, I knew in grad school so only worked 'regular' arch jobs for a short time.My favs:

tkmeister,
I went to the University of Texas Arlington, between Dallas and Ft. Worth.
A good high school friend and I both started in Architecture, we possibly had the idea to transfer to Austin after a semester, but learned that in some ways the UTA program had some better things going for it.Anyhow, I changed majors to Advertising, he stuck it out and then got his Masters AND an MBA at the same time.
He actually just finished his certification exams and should be licensed soon. Works for a firm in Texas that does schools and city buildings and they're stuff is really good.

unite! the arch-dropout!
i would do MBA if anything. doing M-Arch and MBA is crazy... but i see the possibility of what you can do with those 2 degrees.
many of my college friends went out to work for famous architects. frank gehry, steven hall, peter eisenman, etc.
it's funny how i hear their personal experience with them. i just don't look at them in the same way i did in college.

dwell mag has so much inspiration for me. Now all I need is a cool 3-400k and I'll start building.

kyl3,
i am with you! i can design and build some kick ass house for 400k easy. the problem would be finding a good property.400k is nothing compare to the price i have to pay for the 1bdroom apt in manhattan.
my buddy in tokyo is working on designing his house. i'd bet he'll have it in 2yrs.

My life will only be complete if I am able to design my own house some day.
I'll probably need $2 million to do so, but always thinking about it.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Property here in colorado could be had for pretty cheap. Maybe up the hill from boulder but I hear that labor is pretty expensive so you have to take that into account. Same as anywhere.
I'd like to do a concrete, corrugated and wood slated combo. maybe ando/alto inspired.
some of the dwell prefabs are pretty sweet.

I was reading about prefab stuff quite a bit a while back. Interesting ideas.
