That Q7 looks nice, but I don't make that kind of money ;)

every SUV out there is a jeep rip/clone
i say stick with the originator
never broke down
but i did flip my cj5 though, completely my fault out playing in the mud, rolled it back over hooked the battery back up and drove it home (then replaced the wheels, entire front clip, and windshield)
jeeps are solid as a rock
everything else is a wannabe
now i want the commander

Then why not wait for this...

i owned a discovery v.3 and its far from being anything near a jeep... they're not even in the same stratosphere.

2006 Honda CRV: Value in Class 10

2006 Suzuki Garnd V: Value in class 6

Although I do like the Suzuki's styling better you can't go wrong with a Honda.
Before that I had a 4Runner, lifted with 33"s, brush gaurds...a real tank but it sucked gas and I only took it off road once or twice a year.
The CRV makes it over passes to the slopes with ease and sips gass.

I bought my wife a 06 Pilot at the end of last year. Great car, I have not been disappointed with it at all. It's got great saftey ratings, and decent MPG.

Personally, I'm more of BMW / Audi guy and can't wait until I can afford one but for the time being, I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Well I do live in a place that requires 4WD as well as hauling capabilities, and I refused a minvan as well. I went with the Ram 1550 King Cab. Me and my wife + 2 kids in car seats + the dog. Put a cover on the back and its the best of both worlds. Downside is milage.
And they are giving the 2005 models away right now.
If you are looking at smaller SUVs and care about milage look at the Ford Escape Hybrid. That may become our second car one day.

I hear you zombie, that Mercury Mariner Hybrid is looking pretty good since my state has offered a $3500 tax credit for hybrids.

someone told me hybrids are only fuel efficient for city driving. I drive mostly high way. I also heard they don't expect them to keep resale value since the technology will be so much better in 4 years.

I really like wranglers but I'm not sure how practical they are as an only vehicle.

The Xtrail/Xterra is the only real option in that list... the (New) sportage comes in at a distant second.
Perhaps the Ford Escape? The hybrid version is pretty highly rated....
And the best of them all is...
The Toyota Highlander!
