I dunno about 'greatest', but I have to agree with _niko. I saw KRS-One this year, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Also on my list are GURU, Freddie Foxx, Pete Rock, Method Man (he just has the ultimate gangsta rapper voice), quite a few of the Wu Tang Clan, Dr Octagon, MF Doom, Mos Def, BIG... the list goes on...
FWIW, I think Saul Williams totally deserves his own category.

jigga and biggie hands down...people will be playing their shit forever and ever. They've got the lyrics and the flow and never fell off. I doubt biggie would have ever been wack even if he was still alive and rapping. Its easy to keep it real when u aren't pretty. Thats my theory anyway...

If you find anything more on that gig in sydney blackspade, post it up, that sounds cool, thanks for that :)
I remember the first time I heard Saul was opening for the original Lyricist Lounge album... awesome.

jaylarson,
yea its a sweet little book, pitty the copy I got signed was water damaged, + a friend spilled some beer on it also :( !!
heres some pics of him speakin in Sydney couple of weeks ago:
..some lady in the audience made a statement that she had stopped listening to hiphop years ago because of the mysoginistic trend developing in the genre. Saul kinda let loose on her for about 20 mins. It was being recorded and I wish I could find it online cos it was a great discussion on the state of hiphop.

Blackspade--
You got to see Saul? nice! I really liked the design of that book. Especially the poem about 911.
For those who haven't heard Saul Williams' last two cds: it ain't spoken word.
I really like the track "Shakespeare" where he teams up with Zack de la Rocha.
Of course this conversation is objective.... otherwise there wouldn't be 38+ replies. Jay-Z, an average poet for average listeners.
It takes a big person to practice retaliation. It takes an even bigger person to practice non-violence.

My vote goes to Big L-definitely.
peep '98 freestyle and you'll know what I mean.

Guru wrecked it for years with Premier, Big L was phat, loved Jeru, Mos Def, the dude from Black Moon, i can't remember his name, and the brothers Wu, Method, Rza, and Gza.
Jay-Z the best? please.

Big L?

Saul Williams? Yall some crackbabies. The only reason he ends up in the rap category is because this isn't a spoken word category.
JayZ is a great example of a great rapper turned businessman. He's succeeded in all of his ventures. My personal favorite rappers is BIGGIE SMALLS who blurred the lines with dope lyrics w/ a more commercialized sound. He was headed to the point JayZ is at now. JayZ took his formula and ran with it.

this greatest rapper argument is futile... there are waaay too many. black thought, malik b, BIG, pac, and all the rappers already named. i would personally say guru. damn, what about MF Doom? what about the underground heads like One.Be.Lo, murs, del, siah, etc. etc.
i still think jay's got skills. so what, he ripped a ton of hooks and some rhymes. he ripped from the best. the man is still living better than all of us combined ever will!! he knew how to hustle. seriously if you listen to the blueprint or black album and dont bob your head, you better check your pulse.
