My advice for a young designer in Philly: Leave.
I lived in Philly for 6 years. 4 of school. 1 of bussing tables. 1 of scrambling for work anywhere I could get it.
The best decision I ever made, career-wise, was my decision to leave.

Yeah, I looked at some gigs in Philly but there's nothing really there. Philly actually has the highest rate of students leaving after graduation, it's like up to 68% right now. Philly looks like its booming with all of the real estate etc., but its all a facade. It's the same talk like N. Liberties is going to be the next Rittenhouse and that was published 20 years ago. I moved to LA, there's bigger budgets and creative is actually appreciated out here. In Philly you'll be stuck with Pharma or textbook layouts!

It's actually not all a facade, we're just not there yet. You better bet I'm still leaving, but this place is coming up.
10 years ago people fell on the floor laughing when you said Fishtown was the new place to be, now all those people are cursing themselves for not buying a house when it was so cheap.
starbucks and vespa dealers are replacing my favorite graffiti alleys.
