Personally I'm all in favour if this site. Admirable concept, however executionally there is a problem, and its about engagement. I'm not pulled into anything in particular, and am left not knowing exactly what im looking at.
There is no dialogue or communication started with the user right up front, so i dont really know what you do.
I think the easiest way to fix this would be to have some introductory paragraph, in the middle column, before the "This is not... Story" etc., that really interacts with the user. Instead of just saying "Easy ethical choices, better living" you should elaborate. That way I'd know what I was doing there.
That would be a quick and easy fix, until you have a chance to look at previous suggestions, such as coloured blocks (a la Oxfam).
Also loose the ticker, the bbc is really relevent content, and if i see something interesting there I'll click it, thus leaving your site.

Thanx all imput fully taken on board, your right maybe it does need some more connection. I guess what we are aiming towards is having a site that will become people first page they go to each day. I guess by having the bbc headlines though we may loose people it was discussed and decided by having it may also keep people on the site we are contemplating changing this to the independent's feed as its more relevant but also trial running it and if people are just leaving our site for the featured feed then removing it.
