Personally I'm all in favour if this site. Admirable concept, however executionally there is a problem, and its about engagement. I'm not pulled into anything in particular, and am left not knowing exactly what im looking at.
There is no dialogue or communication started with the user right up front, so i dont really know what you do.
I think the easiest way to fix this would be to have some introductory paragraph, in the middle column, before the "This is not... Story" etc., that really interacts with the user. Instead of just saying "Easy ethical choices, better living" you should elaborate. That way I'd know what I was doing there.
That would be a quick and easy fix, until you have a chance to look at previous suggestions, such as coloured blocks (a la Oxfam).
Also loose the ticker, the bbc is really relevent content, and if i see something interesting there I'll click it, thus leaving your site.
