Here's my problem. About a year ago I bought a Lacie (Porsche) Hardrive to back all my work from the mac that I used at my old job, which was fine... but now I cannot open anything because most of the files have lost their extension (i presume this is the reason?).
All the directories have got something called: RESOURCE.FRK
FINDER.DAT
in them and what used to be the file is now just a grey box...Does anybody know what I can do about this? When I click on the FINDER.DAT icon it opens up Graphic converter but it doesn't do anything else...
Would really appreciate any help!!!
Cheers

Select the files and com + I (info) them. Then, go to "ownership & permissions". When there, drop down the details and click the lock. Then you can try going up the info palette, and click show extensions under the "names & extensions" section.
let me know if this helps.,

sounds like you backed up work from os9 and are now using osx?

finder.dat and FRK etc are just files that the hard drive uses to locate your work. ie where each file is.
You can't open those files, they are just for the computer. Your work files have gone grey because they are not linked to a program anymore. Use probably used a different version of the software a while ago.
If you open each file from within the relevant application they should open up (ie go to file>open)
then press save and they will have the correct extension and icon again.
You have to know which program they were created in originally.

you might want to Get Info on the disk and check what formatting it is using... HFS+ etc

Thanks for the help. What if the files are fonts? Is their anyway of getting them back?
