I've got this SEO specialist telling my agency that java rollovers (simple image rollovers in DMWV for example) are giong to be less attractive to spiders than CSS based rollover...
true? he's proposing a redesign of the navigation system, which would piss off a lot of people around here who worked on the layout of the site. how big of a difference does it make?
gracias

it's not the end of the world but you're better using CSS to emulate rollover effects...
this might help: http://www.alistapart.com/storie…

yes spiders like nicer, proper, lighter code. this does mean that css is friendlier but that shouldnt be the biggest issue.
however i would tend to trust the guy if he is from a reputable seo company.

excellent weestu, thanks
and how design-friendly is CSS for replicating a simple graphic rollover?
this is not my design, but you can see what we're dealing with here:
is that re-creatable (visually speaking)?

yeah, his company is small, but it's all he does, and I have a decent enough handle on SEO to know that he's on top of his game
I do trust him, but he's NOT a design guy/interface guy, and it might be my job to steer him towards a CSS solution that doesnt jack up our (simple) navigation look and feel

that would be very easy to do with css mate - search for soe image replacement techniques - try a list apart or simple bits...
They are totaly the way to go, just as effective and much lighter/easier to edit etc...

should be easy to recreate although you will probably have to compromise on the font and font-size. Some of these examples might help you code the CSS:

even if you didn't want to show the html text but kep your font etc displayed, you can still manage it with css:

thanks all – good to know that it's flexible on the design side
time to study up!

There is no reason anyone who worked on the design would have to be 'pissed off' about it. You can change the code and make the rollovers look exactly the same an probably even be more responsive.
Alot of HTML/JavaScript code generated by programs like Fireworks etc are a mess anyway.
The html would only display simple semantic markup for the spider to read through with all the style residing on the CSS file.
