same thing happened to me with my pb...
my hd failed so it couldnt be recognized by any other machine, it was replaced by apple.. but i did loose my data that wasnt backed up.
sad.
btw.. always keep music and such on an external.. i basically keep nothing on my pb except apps and the current thing i am working on, which is backed up...

just try to not save a bunch of new stuff as it may write over what you lost.
