All you full time illustrators out there, do you have an rep or do you manage your own clients? Any in-house illustrators out there? Just wondering how you guys go about making a living. It just seems like it could be tough... is it really all about finding that niche?... having a style that nobody else has?

The illustration business is a very tough business, but there are several very successfull illustrators. The key is to develop a consistent style.

Even when I had 2 reps at once, covering the US and Europe, I still brought in 95% of my work through my marketing efforts. It's a bit of a scam, but they can bring in some work.
I'm currently rep-less, though I'm half-heartedly looking for new ones. Certain large clients prefer to work with an illustrator through a rep, so if you want some of those jobs, ...
An illustrator needs a recognizable style. It helps if it's somewhat original, but it's not necessary. There are a lot of lousy illustrators getting good work.

go yourself alone. it's harder, but better. Reps are a pain in formalities and if you deal directly with clients, the better.
(even tho I'm involved with a rep agency, it only brought me about 0,5% of my total gigs)
propagate yourself, if the works speak for themself, clients will rather prefer avoid your rep and deal w/ you
good luck.

I work in-house, and i basically have to be a do-it-all kind of guy. Most of our work is print production for books and educational materials, so it's all infographics, technical stuff, math & science, medical illos etc.
Style is kind of a no-no, you have to be pretty bland and generic. But the pay isnt bad and you have job security/benefits...
