Even when I had 2 reps at once, covering the US and Europe, I still brought in 95% of my work through my marketing efforts. It's a bit of a scam, but they can bring in some work.
I'm currently rep-less, though I'm half-heartedly looking for new ones. Certain large clients prefer to work with an illustrator through a rep, so if you want some of those jobs, ...
An illustrator needs a recognizable style. It helps if it's somewhat original, but it's not necessary. There are a lot of lousy illustrators getting good work.
