Photoshop Paths

I'm having a total nightmare today (and yesterday). Making clipping paths in CS. Some of them are nested paths, with one inside another. When I open the file in Quark the paths behave as they should but when I select them in Photoshop, everything OUTSIDE the main path is selected and all paths INSIDE are ignored.
This doesn't happen when creating the paths in Photoshop 7, but when the new file is opened up in 7 it behaves in exactly the same way as CS. BUT when a new path is created in that document in 7 it all works fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the fuck is going on?!?!? Is it a preference or tool preset I'm forgetting about?
(P.S. did a search in here and can't find anything, or on the Adobe site)

Never mind I've worked it out. It now takes 4 steps to select the path instead of 1 like it used to. Thanks Adobe for sending Photoshop CS back in time.
Pffft.
