alright, i don't usually post substantial stuff around here... but i'm at a loss and could use some design related experts.
i'm just out of college, and in school i was pretty good. generally good grades, good portfolio, went to the ADC portfolio review in NYC. late in the year i got a big freelance gig.
this gig was 'total creative freedom,' catalogue / book for modern furniture design company. i jumped at it, of course. since then i've enjoyed it, but creative freedom has turned into a bunch of "no"s and "people won't understand" and "can't do that."
today i got the call that said, 'send us your most recent invoice and if it's too much $ you're canned.' i guess my problem is, from day 1 they've said i can do as i please, and i've sent them everything from minimalist to david carson in style and everything from flagrant to mild conceptually and they toss it all out. i art directed a photo shoot and the pictures came out gorgeous and they just don't like them.
i'm not exactly sure how to communicate with these people, and if any of you have been in a similar place, i'd love to hear of what you did. i mean, the check to pay my rent will be nice, but i'd much rather save the job and do this, because it's one of those opportunities that could really get my name out there. thanks.

take the cheque and say thanks. if they dont understand your work now they may never like what you do for them.
sometoimes you need to be able to say 'thanks, sorry it didnt work out.'

You have to ask yourself if, in all honesty, the work you're doing is appropriate for your client. It might look great, but that doesn't mean it will be functional. If that doesn't work for you, become a 'fine' artist.
If the answer is yes, all ego aside, then pack up your bags and look elsewhere. Go work for a design firm. It will open your eyes to what you're doing wrong. It did for me, anyways.

the odd thing is i was hired for my style; i fill pages up, i do crazy type... basically, they found the book i pbulished and loved it and hired me because of it. the book has a wide array of styles and they wanted me to sort of just "go crazy" (in their terms). so when i did, they were taken aback.
all i ever did was follow what they wanted, and now it's seriously constricting. we'll see what they say about the bill.

It sounds like your client doesn't know what they want. It's not you, it's them. Some people are control freaks. They rope the bronco then do their best to break it.
check. cash. outtie.

i'll see what they say. thanks for the hints though, the preliminary work (that they hated) i showed to a few friends and they all said it was great. so i just think it's a sense of they know what they want but don't know how to say it or convey it in any sense of the word.

Dude, What was dissapointing about stonehenge, This is set to become one of the new wonders of the world.
It might not be as big as a sky scraper but they didn't have cranes back in those days.
