you dont need distiller
you could cut down your file size down with in Indesign.
there is a limit on jpeg dpi rate for pdf setting in ID

If you have the full version of Acrobat...
Advanced > PDF Optimizer
reduce the resolution.

Tickle its bunghole. That will make it pucker and reduce size.

Try lower and lower dpi in the export dialog. It'll be a custom export setting. If you have a lot of illustrator files placed, try rastorizing some of them.

gramme, your method, is virtually the same as that mentioned in mayo's comment. but acrobat does offer some nice optimization features, especially if you choose Tools > PDF Optimizer > Clean Up > Check REMOVE PRIVATE DATA FROM OTHER PROGRAMS
