Does anyone use this 3D software? I've been playing around with the demo and it seems great.
Was wondering if anyone else can share their experience.
- Point50
actually thinking about dl'n this week and trying it out this weekend.

You downloading the demo or full version?

Depends on what you are using it for. It can't render (it 'fakes' the light and shadows), but it looks kinda cool. You can buy a render plugin, like Final Render, VRay, Brazil, Maxwell (some don't have their stand alone renderers out yet, but soon)
It is a great modeler for simple things, but not complex things.
If you know what it does well and that's what you need, it can't be beat (simple architecture is what it was made for). But if you want flexibility, look towards more well rounded programs like C4D, Lightwave, Softimage (all similar in price for basic versions).

I'm using it for simple architecture - so it seems well-suited.

that's pretty cool
- mbr0
Yup, then it can't be beat, esp. at the price.
For more power and flexibility, take a look at FormZ. It's still, in my opinion, the best architectural modeler. Costs more, though, and is more complex/difficult to use.You can always export SketchUp models to Max for quality renderings later on, if you want.

form-z takes three times as long.
sketchup's walkthrough technology is just one of the many reasons to get it...
saved my ass many a time.

nico, you got examples of what you've done w/ Sketchup?

Sketchup in alright, but as the name says.. it's a sketch program. If you want more control of thing, you should move up. I use FormZ on 5th year now and would never consider anything else... Rendering light with FormZ beats everythign else by 1000's of miles

Just tried it and it actually seems quite nice for quick sketches, but I am no 3d Pro so don't listen to me :)

Our team just adopted and trained on SketchUp as the majority of what we do is create and design environments. Working with our vendors, sharing and building models, we have a repository of all the pieces they can rent us to quickly create accurate scenes for clients. It's incredibly easy to use, and with a decent rendering plug-in, outputs some really nice scenes. This makes using Photoshop seem archaic sometimes.
- We also use Fusion 360 to build more detailed pieces, and we can import them into SketchUp.monospaced
- are you able to share examples? I've been playing with Blender but not totally sold yetGnash
- I haven't done much in Fusion, but it is pretty fucking rad, and extremely capable from what I can tell.monospaced
- It's a million times easier than Blender, btw.monospaced
- Sketchup and Blender/Fusion are for totally different things. Sketchup is for architectural size models. The others are for smaller.monospaced
- Ya, I get that they have different uses (blender/fusion vs Sketchup). But i mentally lump the 3d stuff together (2d guy here)Gnash
- -- im using blender mainly because it's open source and I can play for free.Gnash

Yup. Used it for modeling retail displays.works great

D/L'd the first time a few days ago - designing the layout for my new office studio space. A little clunky out of the box but once you get the hang of it it makes sense, you move quick, pretty cool. The 3D Warehouse is great too, even had my Mackie 32.8 mixing board in there.

I'm using it at this very moment and have been for about 7-8 years.
It's awesome, even with it's limitations. Now that trimble has purchased it from google, i wonder how long before the free version will not be available.

Sketchup is so good on skamburgers

Here's a tradeshow booth I modeled based on some measurements. Took only a few minutes. The vendor-provided furniture models correspond to items we have available to rent.
I'm also working on the artwork for the booth panels, as well as some other elements, but you can see how it can help sell the final look.
- let the rendered go for a couple minutes and you get this: http://f.cl.ly/items…monospaced
- No Apple logo?organicgrid
- But seriously mono... You find SketchUp very easy to use, does it achieve the results that you are looking for?organicgrid
- It helps because now we can show structures that we intend to build, before we build them, with graphicsmonospaced
- and yes, tremendous resultsmonospaced

Using Keyshot with SketchUp is awesome...makes things so much easier, and the renderings look amazing. https://www.keyshot.com/
- I bet it is. It's $1000 and up.monospaced
- Yeah, thats the down side. But adding textures...drag and drop, huge library, awesome lighting effects and pre-built stages.JackRyan
- Its rad...depending how tight you want to get your renders, could be worth it.JackRyan
- Thanks, we're working on getting something so we can place lighting, at least.monospaced
