Four years ago, while in grad school, I received this message on my answering machine, which sounded like some German guy babbling incoherantly. It turned out it was this film director http://www.wernerherzog.com asking for some assistance on his first english only screenplay. Evidently a professor had passed on one of my stories, he liked it, and so he decided to contact me. At first I was supposed to just help with sentence structure and the like, but when I met with him at this film studio in Berkeley, he essentially gave me free reign to rewrite the entire script.
For 3 days I labored over the story, which I didn't even care for very much, and then met with him at his SF apartment to discuss the changes. Some of my work he liked and kept, some he crossed off annoyingly (he's notorious for being difficult, although we got along fine). We also collaborated on several new scenes, where he would say things like, what would you call an enemy at war as you were killing him? And I would say something like bitchassmuthafucker jokingly, and he would smile all animated and add that to the script.
Well at the end, he paid me quite generously for my work and that was it. I went on to my own stuff and never heard from him again. He's made several new films in the interim including Grizzly Man - released this past sumer, so I assumed our project was dead, but last night, while doing a google search, I came across the following trailer, which is, of course, the film I helped write:

It's now called Rescue Dawn, and no it's not the sequel to Red Dawn. At the time, in order to work with him, which I was quite honored to do, I signed a contract agreeing to give him sole screenplay credit (it was of course his story) but he did tell me I would be credited as a consultant. Either way, it's not a big deal, it's just cool to think that Christian Bale, who is a solid actor, will be voicing lines that I wrote in my little Oakland studio back in the day.

"bitchassmuthafucker" will surely go down as one of the most oft repeated lines of this new century
