12 days???
god... i know i might be bragging but i have time off (non paid). but trust me it isisn't fun. stuck here in queens everyday feels like youre being glued to a rat trap. but yes, i know, its better than walking to work in the cold.
i seem to "miss out" on all these occasions... last time the black out i was also stuck home, that time i really wanted to go out to experience it.
im boring everyone
sigh...

robotron3k the TWU looks bad because they went on strike and are using extortion and holding us all hostage to get more money. They make more money than most public servants in NY and have a pretty sweet deal as it is. Little old ladies have to walk 2 miles in the freezing cold, a lot of business are going to out of business and the hardest hit are employees who make little money and have to travel the farthest. Most people are spending their days pay just to get home. Its sickening- TWU lost all my respect- They should be replaced with an automated system.

reminds me of the london tube strikes we often had...suck it up!

can you describe an automated and how it would work in nyc?
can you also describe other areas that have an automated train system.

this really sucks. i am not working, yet it sucks. the traffic is aweful and i can't even get a cab.
the union is making a big mistake.

i didn't take any pics... it's one of those things. i go there every year. after a while, u just stop taking pics. i saw this 3meg pix camera cellphone there. i wanted sooo bad! but i knew it won't work over here. if i had that, i'd be taking pics all over.

All big strikes inconvenience the towns or cities they take place in. When auto-workers strike, the small towns that the plants are situated in come to a grinding halt as all local businesses rely upon the auto-workers for their patronage.
Every bit of progress we have made in this country has been due to civil disobedience. And in every case, the media and government officials have been oppositional. Not until later (sometimes decades later) do those actions get recognized--and even then, history pretends like progress just happened, rather than fought for and earned.
The few days of inconvienence that this will cause is worth it. The MTA has a billion dollar surplus and can't even give their workers a modest raise. That's criminal.
Additionally, if a strong union like the TWU can't even hold onto their hard-earned benefits like their pension and healthcare, what chance do other workers have. Just because designers have to pay for everything out of pocket have no job security doesn't mean it should be that way.
We shouldn't be resentful that they have good benefits and semi-decent pay (not everyone is making top dollar like the media would have us believe), we should try to fight for that in our industry and in other industries.
Support the TWU. Make a small gesture. Go to the nearest picket location and offer them coffee or donuts, go to the rallies, contact your local media. If the TWU loses this battle, we all lose.

Hopefully they settle this soon. Waiting an hour for the LIRR in this weather isn't helping my cold.
This is NYC, so whatever. I remember moving here a month before 9/11 and walking across the Manhattan bridge after the explosion. I also remember walking home along the highway to Queens during the blackout. Been here 5 years without any regrets.....well, maybe one.

The TWU strike is over? or well, maybe it is... they have agreed to go back to work while negociating, but the good thing is folks... Christmas is not canceled! On to last minute shopping!

yeah, i need to get something for my gf...
i walked 60blocks in the cold yesterday trying to find a gift. now, that's love.

the concept of the strike doesn't bother me, but it's pretty low to do it this week.
i heard on the news somewhere that as part of their new contract they want to change the retirement age to 50. anyone know if this is true?
- gruntt0
i believe the argument was about the age where one can collect 1/2 pension (55). the powers that be said they'll only agree to that if the employees pay 6% of their check to cover it (up from 2%).
