I am an American wanting to move to London in the Spring. I am curious how much a junior designer might earn per year. Also, where might I be able to live on that salary? No portfolio online yet but will within the next couple of months. Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Any other info you can provide would be appreciated.
Cheers,

anything from £14,500-£17,000 depending on the company. Web designers tend to get more than packaging designers. Good luck!

Coming to London as a junior is very optimistic and will be tough going, do you have any experience at all?
Living is very expnsive indeed and it will be hard to survive on a junior's wage. Do you have friends in London, that you could use their floor to crash on

is £17,000 enough to make a decent living in or near London?

...and try East London for somewhere to live on that salary. Stepney Green, Bethnal Green, Dalston and Hackney all have fairly cheap (for London) accomodation. The shittier bits of North London might be an option too. Either way you'll be looking for a house-share/flatshare with a few other people.

Freinds: yes. Experience: almost 2 years in print. Some web.

make sure you work your ass of and you'll have a posibility something. join an agency and be brutal in your self-promotion.
you can get up to 20k if you are good... good luck!

2 years experience will get you 20k+. Stay with mates to start off with then find your feet, a decent job and there you go. It is a very fierce market though

there is no such thing as earning a good living in London, its way too expensive unless you're a fucking merchant banker.

Will it be harder as an American? Do you know if work Visas are hard to come by? thanks for the well-wishes.

income tax is quite high in the UK and living costs are extortionate in London. Travel alone will eat a lot of your monthly allowance. There is also something called Council Tax which can work out to be a £100 a month depending where you live in addition to all your bills.

you could lok into what the deal is with a working holiday visa, otherwise it will involve getting a company to prove that you are someone so specialised that they cannot find someone with your skills within the UK, which is not going to happen in the design industry. I think it's pretty hard, but not impossible.

Same as anywhere in England but at a much higher level in London.
Regularly, cash wise you'll need to pay, (assuming you're living on your own):
Rent
Council tax
Electric
Gas
Phone
Cable/ Sky
Travel
Food
ClothingIf you have a car you'll have to pay:
Parking
Congestion charge
Repairs, (you will get car nicked or damaged regularly)
Road tax
PetrolAnd this is before you even think about a night out which will cost around £50 a time.
Easiest way to do it:
Stay on a friends sofa and bike to work. Work will hopefully have a subsidised cafe.good luck matey, you'll need it.

sh*t, I wouldn't move to London unless it was at least in the £30,000 range.
