Hi again,
I am trying to animate a dynamic text box that loads a variable (text).
the text loads fine when the textbox is within a graphic, but I cant apply the script to animate it.
I can apply the script when its a MC but the text won't load.
can anyone help me here? Oh, and the file needs to be saved out as flash 5 player.
thanks to anyone in advance.

you can only animate dynamically loaded text into a text box within an MC. if yr MC name is TxtHolderMC
you would use
_root.TxtHolderMC.myTxtFieldName... = loadedText
to load the txt into it
or for html text
_root.TxtHolderMC.myTxtFieldName... = loadedTexthope that helps

thanks undo, I'll give it a try. i really appreciate it.

so I take it this won't work because flash 5 doesn't support text field instance names.
it also still won't load my variable into a MC, only a graphic containing the textbox. What am I missing here(other than a decent job)?

not sure about flash 5 but you need to name the textField with an instance name(if that's not available in5 trying setting the textfiled variable name to be the same as the instance name, the variable field is in the lower left of the properties window)
you must make sure the MC has the right name on the stage and it on the root timeline (not nested inside other MC's)
also make sure that the MC is on the first frame and before yr actionscript is executed.
i'll send you an mx file, see if you can open it

*sidenote, one more month of this place and I'll stop asking asinine questions about a 10 yo flash version. thanks again for all your help.

no problem kyl, we all start somewhere :)

yeah it's hard to find helpful documentation on the old players. And all the work arounds from back in the day are lost in obscurity.
I actually have much better luck when working on more recent flash player spec. although I'm no actionscript expert.

it could be worse...
flash lite 1.1. [4 mobiles] uses mostly Flash 4 syntax.

yep that would be worst ;p
