Can someone give me a good reason why NOT to use 2 < br > tags and use a < p > tag instead.
Need to persuade a client

p is one letter, thus easier to type and faster to load.....

Sometimes using the p tags doesn't exactly equal two br tags, does it? Has to do with CSS.
Just from personal experience, unless I'm delusional.

replace [ with <
you should use [br /] (that's the right way) inside a [p] tag [/p]
this is goode practice,
if you style the p tag you can get exactly the results you need. there is also no problem doing this [br /][br /]

We use br tags in our body text on our online magazine, cos its just shift-return (easier to type in Layout view in GoLive)...how would I do that with p tags?

(Dec 14 05, 07:53)Just set up the [p] tag as required. Instead a shift-return, just return ;)

There's nothing wrong with it.
There's lots wrong with the P tag though in a first-paragraph... knocks your text down in FF.
I use double breaks to shunt tables below a heading for example...

i used to use the 2xbr but since ive been using alot of css, you will have way more control over the final output if you wrap the text in p tags and format the p in css.

agree sherman, moth I am disgusted

1) When using XHTML and CSS, the br tag is advised against. When you try to validate your page, you will see an error message saying you should change it.
2) With the p tag, you can properly set up your padding in CSS to allow a hard-return to add your desired space at the end of a paragraph.

More importantly Dancer - why the fuck does your client give a monkeys how you mark up their page and what are you even having a debate about it with them for?
I'm having a total mare with a xmas animated card at the mo. Could someone tell me how to best throttle a client over the phoneline?

Why use [ ] instead of < >?

replace [ with <
sometimes NT strips out the tags
al;ways use < and > for tags!
- Jaline0
yeah, it can get a bit messed up here when trying to incorporate html-esque items in a response.

yr probably using [br] instead of the correct [br /]
replace [ with < and ] with >

Okay, correcting myself...
The normal < br > tag will come up as an error in XHTML validation because it requires being closed, as < br / >

huh? how? I'm working in Layout Mode here (dont want to go into Source view for this stuff...waaay too much content to cut n paste n publish to start getting into anything more than Layout mode)
- ribit0
of course we shouldn't be using GoLive for this..should be in a CMS...but thats coming in a few months...

Normal is br / in XHTML.
