Yes it was based on Akzidenz and originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, designed to compete with Univers, but was a commercial flop it was only when it was re-named Helvetica(Switzerland) that it became a huge success, and ironically it has become as neutral as the country it is named after. Daft eh?

one of my type professors in college was obsessed with akzidenz grotesk. he even set his entire book in it.

akzidenz is number one for me, even more when i do posters, especialy in silkscreen, but sometimes, particulary now i need a substitute for it for an art gallery project and i'm divided between univers and frutiger, cause in frutiger i don't have the right c's, and in univers the right y's and in both i don't have the G's!!! like the akzidenz, and i prefer akzidezn's k's and G's over all, so i don't know...
but helvetica???
and the R's?

I am a big fan of Akzidenz, and like it alot more than Helv, the angled cuts I think give it alot of character. I have seen it used wonderfully, but I prefer it used in smaller doses like for display or small captions.
I recently typset a spread about Tschichold for a project in Akzidenz and after looking at it for a long time the slightly heavier caps started to bother me a little.

I agree with negative space, firstly, Akzidenz is beautiful typeface, but i prefer a document of any weight to be set in a nice serif and the captions to be set in Akzidenz (or Univers), all within a nice grid system of course.
I could easily live without Helvetica, I think akzidenz and univers are nicer in so many ways!
