Flash projector Q.
Creating a flash CD-Rom for a client.
The disk will auto load; no probs autorun.inf file, done. Then I need to get flash to launch/open an Excel document (sign-up form) from the local disk; C: drive.
Can it be done?
Issue is the .xls has to be saved into repeatedly.
HELP!!

Come on, I know one of ya hot flash guru's are just oozing with knowledge, don't keep it bottled up, let it flow out!
btw only got a couple of hours to deadline on this one!

you should have researched about the subject before you started the project not 2 hours before the deadline!

you need a third party software to open the file from the client's computer or you need to put your CD into Director and director has a API that allows you to open files from the client's computer.
Now, I dont know if you could force the Excel file to save itself once it is open.
When you say "saved into repeatedly" you mean that the Excel file has to be saved into while it is open, or do you mean that it has to be saved into everytime is lauched?

We did research it, opening a file from the CD-Rom it's self is easy: fscommand exec.
Which we told the client was all they could do but now they want to be able to build a sign-up database into a single file.
So yeah it needs to be saved into everytime it's launched, as to create this list of sign-ups. It's a rewards program signup tool that sales staff will use to signup new people to the program.
Have any suggestions for the 3rd party; i've checked out flash jester's start, but not sure wheather I can target a local file using that?
Thanx in advance fusion!

You can use Zinc and at this point if you already agreed with the client what you can ONLY deliver, whatever extra should be up to you to deliver.
But that is just my personal opinion.
Another thing you can do is have the sign up take place on a website, you can either re-direct them to the site or have flash handle everything from the desktop application. Of course you would have to let the user know that they need a connection to the internet before filling out the application.

Hope that helps!

Cheers fusion,
Yeah looking into Zinc now. But not sure this job will pay for the OSX version.
But I think it's something i'll have to invest in.
As to the internet connect, that's a no go, they'll be on the road travelling so can't ensure a connection everywhere.
We've just told the client that we aren't able to deliver what they're asking in time for the deadline, so we're going with the initial breif, funny that...
Just going to do a "readme first" pdf that gives instructions to copy the presentation folder with the fscommand folder onto the desktop.
Easier that way. Client has conceded that it's a solution.
Thanx for your advice and know-how.
