Is there an easy way to make an even gradient edge around an irregularly shaped object. The same way you could with a plain circle or by feathering a shape and erasing the edge in PS.

maybe add a outer glow and tweak it , or drop shadow

make a shape and then clone it and reduce it in size.
make the outside white and the inside one whatever colour.
then use the blend tool.

effect/ gaussian blur.. ?
or was that too obvious.

what breadlegs said.
that way you're not dealing with transparencies.

Thanks, it has been a long time since I have really gotten into Illustrator.
I am vectorizing someones existing logo. Currently it has a gradient but I plan to make one without it too. I still need to find out how it will be printed so I can take that into consideration.

Is this really the best way to do this:
"A gradient that contains two tints of the same spot color will be separated on a single spot color plate. To create a gradient that separates on one piece of film between a spot color and white, create a gradient fill between the spot color and a 0% tint of the color."
??

if you're setting up logo for spot offset. like a corp ID package, then most definitely yes.
you could supply a CMYK version as well.

So with CMYK it would be better to blend into white than 0% tint.

CMYK it doesn't really matter because the prepress will convert any spots in the doc to CMYK..
but if you want to build your files correct, the CMYK version should blend from a CMYK value to a CMYK.. or edit your spot swatch to global process.

(Dec 9 05, 09:50)but i should probably add.. if you are sending the job to press, don't count on your prepress guys to catch the spots. they could be pricks and output to plates just to teach you a lesson. it happens.
