My sites been down last night, and my hosting company said my domain name expired. I called Register.com and they said it was registered by in2net.com and I don't remember registering with them but i'm not exactly sure. Does this sound like a scam to you?

if it expired there is a grace period when you can still get it back. register.com should know that. are you SURE you reg'd it when them? did you whois it to see who owns it?

I'd like to register my domain name through either register.com or gate.com (my host), but they said it's locked by in2net.com. I never heard of in2net.com, that's why I was checking to see if this was a scam

what is your domain?

I'd prefer to stay anonymous. Where can I find out?

Go here, enter the domain name, and it has the expires date written in there pretty clearly, that will tell you if you're getting scammed or not. Unless your registrar has changed ownership since you registered the domain, they're the only people you should receive legitimate notifications with regards to your domain.

also, maybe you were warned that your domain was going to expire but the email address where you were receiving the warnings was not active or you dont check it frequently, or maybe your email software detected it as spam and deleted it for you.
THere are many things that could happen but one thing is for certain, all registrars let you know when your domain name is about to expire, if you dont do anything people are out there waiting in line to buy domain names so then they can sell them back to you for much much more.

in2net.com seems like a legitimate company, and I did a search on my domain name, and it says it was registered through them so I guess it's ok

errr, so you didnt remember you bought the domain name through in2net.com?

those f@*ks at register.com
resell their domain registration services to other companies so you have to contact them get them to release the lock if you want to move it. Had to do it a while back for a client

they dont necessary sell it to other companies, You will aways get a warning letting you know that your site will expire. even after the domain has expired some companies will hold it for you for up to 2 months, in case you dont realize you are about to lose your domain.
While in the other side fellaws dedicate their time finding sites that have been online for years and then they place themselves on waiting line for when the domain is released, if they are the onlyones waiting for the domain they have to pay a fee to get it, if there is more than 1 people in waiting line for the domain they but it for bid and the one that bids the most gets the domain, that is why in order for them to get their money back
1. they have to find a domain that has been for years on the market, that way most likely the original owner is going to pay to get it back
2. they have to place themselves in waiting line for hundreds or even thousands of sites. You can do it yourself with godaddy.com just search for a domain and if some one else owns it, they show you there that you can reserve the site and they will try to get it for you.
I think some one is trying to make this illegal. I have been waiting for a domain name of my first name for about 4 years now, every year I email the owner and ask if he has brought the price down, and every year its the same aswer.
:we have several people asking for this domain, make and offer and we will review"
I reply back with, How much do you want?
and the starting price is at 2,000.
that is how business works I guess.
