This question would have been valid 5 years ago.
Now, it just sounds silly.

given the FlashPlatform, Flex and ActionScript 2.0 I'd say it's fairly reasonable to deduct that both ActionScript and Flash will be here for a good while to come.
By making ActionScript more ECMA compliant it has opened Flash up to a fuller potential. AS 3.0 is said to be fully ECMA compliant.
When you also take into consideration the user base of Flash it would take a killer application to touch it. Despite the vast funding I'm not sure that MS Sparkle will achieve anymore than liveMotion did - if you remember LiveMotion 2 and its claims of superiority over Flash MX.... and was there ever a LiveMotion3?

I would like to focus on hard core actionscripting only, but you don't see a lot of positions available for actionscripters.

I agree... I see actionscript jobs all the time... just look on the NT job board. Of course they are looking for hardcore...

i agree with several other users.... just learn programming the RIGHT way and then focus in on specific languages. this will allow you to more easily flow between them based on jobs/projects. plus, you know one and you can pretty much get the others down really easily!
definitely get really comfortable with OOP as well.
