How long do you believe flash will last? I'm considering investing my knowledge in advance actionscripting. My other choice is php and mysql.

i would go with php/mysql before actionscripting as it will much more useful (unless of course all your development will occur in flash). though, i'm sure flash will still be here a while, so definitely get into actionscripting once you're comfortable with php.
you could also go with javascript before actionscript since they are quite similar in many ways...

So basically the hard core flash coders will have to learn something else? I'd love to develop my actionscripting skills.
- urban100
i'm sure that's bs...
you could go with AJAX as well as it seems to be taking over the role of simpler interactivity that earlier versions of Flash held but is quickly moving more towards complex web applications. plus, AJAX works in conjunction with javascript.

adobe has officially taken over macromedia, so speculation is that they will end up doing a sort of web based creative suite esque type of deal. Flash will still be pretty strong, and probably will be the main streaming media option for a long time, until something new comes along to give adobe a run for their money.

and i doubt it will be 'sparkle' that does that!

flash wont leave anytime soon and it doesnt hurt to learn a couple of new languages. If I was you I would learn all my AS 1,2 and 3 along with php and mySQL. you can add some .NET along the way.
Now the real question is, what do you want to be? a Designer or a Developer? so you can be more concrete on what to learn. but for sure flash is here for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong time

I'm pretty new to it. My actionscripting level is between beginner and intermediate.

- flash is well established as is - everyone and their great-uncle is using flash video lately, and the golden-age of Flashlite (look it up) is yet to be seen; honestly, as much as i respect the programmer, finding a person who can PWN in illustration/ motion design is a def. find.

Just learn to program dude. Pick something established... like flash... and go with it. Once you get it, you can move to other things easily. Dont focus on flash hacks or tricks, just learn solid programming. Then you will be the man (not The Man).

flash will outlast mankind
