My Grandad survived DDay+1 but was killed by French bandits, they threw a grenade at him and robbed him. They caught them and were sentenced...

the last serious girl i dated dad was a wwII vet. he was a marine at iwo jima. only 17 when he joined. he was so small and skinny, his job was to crawl in tunnels and scream at the japanese to surrender. he brought back a few japanese rifles. he was a real cool man

I tell you, when I was in Luxenbourg to see that (one reason I always goof with that country), it was very depressing. You go in thinking you'll be ok and not cry and then you stand there and there is nothing but white crosses and some Star's of David and you look down at your surname and you start balling. It's sereal you're surrounding by death but all for the same reason. It's strange man.

kind of shitty looking back at these soldiers and what they died for - a real cause
and then soldiers that died/die in iraq over what...

things are cyclical, good leaders/bad leaders, it's just hard to justify in our heads. but I know what you mean. I think it's a bit different though, the draft was in affect. I know my grandfather and great uncles didn't want to go in the first place. I have evidence of this in a letter to his sweetheart, who obviously he never married. It;s strange reading those. I should scan and post them.

mattyd, that's BAD@SS kid. You're grandad and my grandad might have been drinkin' buddies hahah :)

most likely, he guarded a brewery in belgium after the war was officially ended. a lot of drinking went on then.
me: hey pup, what did you guys have for breakfast there?'
my grandad: when we were guarding the brewery, we just used to crack an egg in a beer and have that. liquid breakfast.
