I made a website for a family friend's company years ago, and have been doing updates for them every now and then. Most of the site was created in flash, and now apparently they have someone who can update/maintain the site for a cheaper fee than me.
Long story short, the site was created without a contract. Who owns the rights to the .fla files?
Do I have to relinquish the files?
I should have made up a contract. Never do work for friends/ family or anyone connected.

they are yours.

So what you are saying then is that I should ask for $.
Then they can have the files.

Hey Canuck, maybe helpful for next time rather than this time.

Hard choice, I immediately think get them to pay for it.

tough question 1. because it's a family friend and 2. because you don't have a contract.
i actually managed to get myself into a very similar situation. i ended up just GIVING the client the files. they were a pain in my ass anyway and so i was glad to pass them onto someone else!
personally (i'm not an attorney), i think that it would be hard to try to make your client pay more money for something that they didn't know would cost them more money in advance.
there's my 2 cents. sell the files for more than that if you choose :)

seeing as how it's a family friend, i'd say it pretty much depends upon how strongly you feel about it.
good relationships, etc., etc...
