Bit serious for a Friday I know... but....
Do you ever have to use a job as purely a money making thing, I kinda always try and give my all creatively to eveery job, but sometimes it seems in vain...
Gotta do some exhibition banners, 4 meters by 2, with a shite logo and horrible colour scheme (orange and blue), and feel I cant possibly do anything beautiful for it, anyone experience this?
Should I just 'knock something out' and take the money and run or get stuck into it and try and polish a turd and see where I get?

If you really do just have shite to work with, no sense in banging your head against a brick wall. Do what you can but don't break yourself. A turd can only get so shiney.
Take the money and never speak of it again.

Exactly my thoughts skt, wise words.
Only thing is its for my local university, which are the kind of clients all of us need to survive, and be nice if we could put it in our folio, hence it would have to be ace!
hmmmm, decisions decision...

Well, do what you can with the time you have. Maybe you can make their shitey logo less prominent and take the viewers eye away from it with a nice job on the rest of the banner.
If you can do a good job do one.

have you seriously never come up against this before David? Jesus, I wish I had your job - everything I do comes down to overheads and I think I have worked on maybe 1 out of 40 projects this year I havn't been forced to try to work magic with total shit for existing assets.
Do it, pocket it, continue to drink whisky for breakfast ;)
- DavidFelt0
ah, i havent got to the stage of whiskey for breaky yet, so you must be way ahead of me, i hope i get to where you are one day, your my new hero..
PS, is it just as cool if i replace the whiskey with gin?

If you feel it's important -
i'd do a few versions, one straight down the line filling all their requirements & then let rip on some really creative versions too (for your book), then show them all & talk them through what you've done & why..Sometime it's worth it.
Some Clients have know idea what they like until they see it - painful but true ; )

Gin works. but be warned it swells the ovaries and may make you cry a lot. Not clever in early moning meeting, whereas stinking of whisky just makes you more of a man, eh? ;)

assets? what are they then?
Yes, do all the media for Kong. Make it shit hot. No, sorry, no you're not allowed to see the film. Nope, no posters either. A trailer... well maybe later, but we want to see the media first. Photos... haha, you have to be joking. Now remember, we want shit hot media.
- DavidFelt0
I like it milo, like it.... now to try and find some inspirational banners (yeah right), seriously though, whos done some seriously corporate signage/banners that look nice?
- kelpie0
I would give my left testicle to work on Kong, regardless of assets.
- ********0
Nah nah nah nah nah. We only got media and emails though. Jacksons keeping the good stuff for his own company.
- kelpie0
*holds out left testicle
please?
*passes out
- DavidFelt0
put that ball away and show me some nice shit done for Universities!
please

I find that a large Jameson or whisky of your choice will help smooth out the pain...
if this is the first time you have come across this then count yourself lucky!!!
And i'm sorry to say this but it won't be the last, all you can do is voice your opinions and if still they know better... then knock it out and think about all the good you can do with the cash ;)
- kelpie0
david, I think Airside did some luverly stuff for the LCP - not uni as such, but it sure was purdy, check their site...

- DavidFelt0
is it on their site kelpie? i cant see it, where did you see it? in a mag or somat?
- paraselene0
you're not really spoiling my idea of the world, david. i just think we live in different ones.
i work to be able to eat and to stay out of my increasingly fascistic madre patria.
it's a bit of a long-term plan with me. i think it's great that you get to have dilemmas like the one you're having now.
always do your best at whatever you're doing, for whatever reason you're doing it.
