MT is NOT good if you're working with large sites - in particular with large databases. They do not allow IP connections to their PHPmyAdmin tool, and they have an upload limit of 2meg on their PHPmyadmin tool, so you're stuck with FTPing SQL files and SShing to run command line commands to upload your database.
I'm not sure if their dedicated servers offer more flexibility though.
I've been happy with www.webmasters.com (I tried MT to see what all the fuss is about, and have not been impressed). Webmasters give you much more control - right down to editing your own global PHP settings - the only thing that annoys me with webmasters is that any time they reboot servers, do upgrades or run maintenance on servers, they never let their users know - so there is no time to prepare for any downtime if needed. (which has been about 5 times in the past year).

I just tried hostway - a Virtual Server system. But I cancelled in the end. The set up took almost a week and then it didn't actually work. Plesk was over complex on some things and didn't allow simple things to be configured. Also they billed me twice by mistake. So it cost over £1000. Needless to say I have demanded a refund and am now looking else where.
I've tried Pipex/webfusion who aren't that good either. I'd be interested to hear other experiences.

mt are slow to ftp too aswell. really pissez me off sometimes.
btw you can upload larger files by putting an .htacccess file in the script folder which ignores the measley safe mode 2mb restriction - you can allocate more memory this way too!

I'm on Dreamhost. Every month they give you just a little more bandwidth. I'm up to 158gb per month. I doubt I'll ever need to use it all but it's nice to know it's there. Inexpensive too.

yes, i have direct experince w/ Rackspace and they are superb. I would not be concerned w/ them going under.
As for DreamHost (my fav) mt, or the like- i do not know what Atlas' requirements are, but these do not even come close to entering the realm of 'serious hosting' in my book. they are budget, limited use hosts (that are great mind you), just not for larger sites or technical requirements.
