Help Decide: Aruba

My girlfriend and I were planning on going to Aruba in February. It's one of our choices among Maui, Waikiki, Bahamas, or Puerto Rico using a free trip she won.
She didn't know much about the Natalie Holloway case in Aruba, I jokingly told her "Aren't we supposed to boycott Aruba?"
We were all set to get it planned, and then her sister went and told her about the danger there, how Dr. Phil says we should boycott it, how women are kidnapped there and sent to a sex trade, etc.
Now, she doesn't want to go. I've tried to give her a bit of info to change her mind such as:
1) There are far more kidnappings and crimes in the US, even in Chicago, than there are in Aruba, most likely. We don't move from here, do we?
2) If you want to boycott it because of their laws, think about this: There aren't laws that prevent people from abducting people, really, the legal system there is unrelated to that.
3) Without being totally naive, I think we could be good about not getting near a bad situation.
--Her sister told her about how a woman was just lying by herself on her cruise ship and was abducted.

So my friends, what should we do? Go, or don't go? Why or Why not?I told my GF that I would leave our decision in your hands. We await your conclusion.

"Her sister told her about how a woman was just lying by herself on her cruise ship and was abducted"

On a more serious note, you're probably safer in Aruba than where you are now. I would personally never let fear have that control over me, that's not how I want to live my life.

just don't let your GF out of sight ;)

i'd say aruba is pretty safe. i was there 3wks ago for the 2nd time.
but if i were to choose out of those, i'd go to Maui.
i'll upload some pics from aruba. use them to convince your gf.
- kyl30
tk, did you windsurf in aruba?
- kyl30
looks beautiful there.
Windsurfing is great. I've done it for about twenty years including a year in maui wavesailing. So much fun. Hang in there, once you get it you'll have a blast.

i wanna be good enough to do wavesailing. go straight up against the wave and fly high!

Dr. Phil should have no bearing on where you plan to vacation. I've travelled enough to know that isolated instances such as that case doesn't mean an entire country should be blamed for it.
That kinda' stuff happens all over, it just received notoriety based upon the fact that she was a young, cute, Caucasian
American girl. You think it would have been blown out like that if she were African American and from the ghetto?Just my opinion...

go to aruba, the island needs all the tourists it can get. like someone said before, if there's one person i wouldn't want to make a dicision about my holiday, it's dr phil....

very interesting mg33..of course you already know what to do though.
GO TO ARUBA.
My dad worked as a consultant there for a year and a half recently in 2003 and I was able to visit him there once. As you already pointed out, it's no less safe then any major city here in America. People were friendly, and I had an amazing time. Make sure you hit the festival / parade when you go as well as taking a jeep out on the island ;)
Whatever you do though, for the love of god please don't give in to the fear that people on TV want you to believe. Your GF's sister sounds like one of 'those'. I'm willing to be she's lived in the same town for nearly her whole life, too.
*rolls eyes*
Have fun whatever you decide!

Much thanks for your responses. :)
Good info, good thoughts.

Bottomline: Have a good time and enjoy. Forget all else.

OMG, it continues. I'm not harping on my girlfriend, but she's told me that her main reason against going is what other people will think of her for going. Coworkers and such.
Who cares.
I've passed along all your points. It's not that I wouldn't mind going to Maui, never been there either. However, if we decide against Aruba, it has to be for the right reasons, and not propaganda and worrying about what other people think.
