I'm seeking the best, not the prettiest, books.
I've never studied either, but I've designed for many years.
thanks

Johannes Itten The art of colour, quite an interesting read with some good graphic examples of his theories...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obi…As for Semiotics, Saussure, Levi Strauss, Charles Peirce?? my knowledge of semiotics is quite basic though, I did an A-Level in Communication Studies and it was taught to us, I think every designer should have a basic grip of semiotics though. Google it!

Take a look at Umberto Eco's semiotics work, it's really well applied and evocative.

barthes and saussure are the guys you'll want. s/z and course in general linguistics might be a smidge more than you need, but image, music, text is a lighter read and hugely inspiring.

Semiotics = books about jewish people?

Read Arthur Berger first--anything of his is a good simple introduction to semiotics. Then read some Debord, Eco, Baudrillard for a couple weeks until you're too confused to continue.
