If you plan to start a small design shop under a certain name in the future do you think it is better to not use the name until you are ready to fully launch the business or do think it is OK freelance under the name until you are ready to expand?
My worry would be for instance when the firm launched it may be tainted with thoughts of 'oh that guy interviewed here' or 'that guy was a freelancer trying to get work here', etc. Do you think it may be better to put it on the shelf and make a strong clean launch when the time is right or does it matter?

if you're a 'freelancer' sell youself under your name, John Doe.
If you're trying to sell your agency, act as if you're not a freelancer but this is your company.
Either way, the names are almost synonymous so you need to jack both names up as much as you can.

when you say "interviewed" or "tried to get work here" does that you you personally are trying to get hired by a company?
the only people you have to worry about when you start a firm would be the client. and chances are you would not be interviewing for a job from someone now who you would try to get as a client in the future... am i right?

"when you say "interviewed" or "tried to get work here" does that you you personally are trying to get hired by a company?"
I mostly mean trying to get work subcontracted from agencies, etc.
"the only people you have to worry about when you start a firm would be the client."
Good point. Being in a relatively smaller market I guess I assumed that it matters what other firms perception is of you, etc.

well when/if you make a firm you will be competing and hopefully getting work that they quote/pitched as well. so they will hate you anyway :)

For some reason I assumed it may be better to start a clean launch as a studio and not have any previous notions attached to it. I guess it doesn't matter.
I have seen examples on the web of different studios that have progressed this way but I can't think of them at the moment. It is probably very common.

Is it very common for smaller design shops to do subcontract work for larger shops or agencies? Sorry, I don't really know anything about how this works. I am just interested in it.
