yeah I burn to DVDs but I want something I can just grab in case of an emergency.
You say Lacie over maxtor?

i've had a few maxtor drives crap on me over the past few years. i can think of 2 offhand that did and took all the data with it, and ended up being RMA'd to the manufacturer. not sure if things are fixed at maxtor now, but that was my experience.

I like my Maxtor 300 gig drive and an older 250 gig drive.
The Retrospect software is a nice addition too.Backs up every night at 1am.
DVDs for extra security.

i have 5 Lacie's and one Western Digital external drive. love them all. the only problem i had was on one of the LaCie's, the thing was just way too loud.

I second the retrospect backup app, it's great, especially if you keep a second box running all the time... you can set it to incrementally backup as regularly as you like...
Bang for your buck, an external USB2.0 Notebook HDD is just as good, esp. if you have less than 100GB to backup... and it's tiny...

I'm using a 300g maxtor as well and yes the retrospect software is a plus. (i'm forgetful so it's great for me) I only had it for about a month so I can't say anything about it's durability as of yet....so far so good though.
