any users? is it good? is it open towards the designprocess?
i want all the details, good and bad... i'm about to buy a customized version for use in all my future projects.
- imakedesign0
why pay??
its good, but i wll take some time to learn.. got a good support forum.
- Timson0
i'm paying the guy who will install it and guide me through the whole application. so, i'm not really buying the app. i'm just buying my time.
so in your eyes it's good. does it in any way limit your designs?
- imakedesign0
there is of course always going to be compromises, but on the whole i would say its very flexible.
- Timson0
good, looking forward to it.
- madirish0
i would disagree that it is 'flexible' completly. the company i used to own was considering joing this community and developing sites w/ Mambo exclusivly. we wereweighing several communities along with our own CMS model that was becomming more and more complete. In the end we went with our own, but not after serious debate and research.
I think the architecture is very limiting and the fact display is not seperate from the data model is silly. yesm there are lots of various 'themes' available, but if you are a designer focused on beuilding quite a bit of, or large scale dynamic sites, i would say mambo is a poor choice if design is a strong consideration for you (which it is seeing you are a designer). I think the data model is certainly robust enough to handle scaling up, performance, ect, but the way in which it is architected has a lot to be desired.
LAMP rules and it is nothing here that is the problem, i just think Mambo has a poor way of structuring it's code, especially w/ regard to the display code.

What CMS system has it's display code separate form the data?
That really is what's needed today. A clean CMS and a clean Ecommerce app. I haven't found either.
Mambo developers are now working on Joomla
- madirish0
the system my company built does. : )
LAMP arch. w/ complete modularity designed as it's core. it is in the process of having documentation written for hosting on Sourceforge.
Plone is also working on seperating the 2 and it is slated to be complete for the next full release.
- KILLputer0
Let me got a copy of that system!
- KILLputer0
Have you ever used Plone? Any good? Looks a bit weaker in management compared th Mambo.
- KILLputer0
come on... more cowbell.
Anyone else?
- madirish0
yes, i have used Plone quite a bit.
not trying to pick a fight at all puter, but to say that Plone is weaker in management over Mambo is laughable. :) it is by far the most robust system available- and in my opinion even more so than any of the proprietary jobs (interwoven, vingette, ect)
This is mostly due to the fact that it is an application server and that it is object-oriented at the db level.
- madirish0
Let me got a copy of that system!
KILLputer
(Nov 10 05, 08:06)oh, you totally can- once it is up on Sourceforge. i'll let you know. ;)
- KILLputer0
Please do email madirsh when it is ready.
I am not arguing at all about Plone.. I never really messed with it. From reviews I read Plone has a STEEP learning curve for customizing, and it helps if one knows Python. No doubt it is powerful, but most likely a bit over my head for my needs.

pony up the bones and get expression engine.
- madirish0
i definitly will, puter.
no worry aboue Plone- it is a pretty intense beast and you are spot on when you say it is steep curve. as a producer, you can get away w/ learnign as you go, but for a developer if you are not pretty fluent in python and ZOPE, you better get reading. ;) it is much different that just about any other dynamic scripting language for web dev. purposes.
the benefits are definitly worth it though....
great conversation here! i am always amazed at how little web designers ever discuss development and/or dynamic content management as it is arguably 60% of any consideration we must make. unless of course people are happy w/ static sites.....
