This isn't really a trick....
Goto System Prefs >Universal Access and it's there under the "seeing" tab, plus the "trick" as you are calling it, to switch your desktop to black

When friend/co-worker leaves take a screenshot of their desktop with no windows open and mouse off the screen. make that picture their desktop background. move the dock to the side and hide it.
