Have any of you read this?

??
It seems to be the position I have reached. Loving design, then starting on my own, only to realise that after a while, when the work flows in and you cant cope, it all starts to take over...

the review states that the author's best business model is McDonald's. pft. this is a book for Project Managers, not designers.
i am sorry, this mentality just kills me, why is the goal money? why can't the goal be good design?
if i wanted to "run a business" i sure as hell wouldn't have gotten into this field in the first place. i do what i do b/c i can and b/c i love it.
if i wanted a "turn-key" solution, i would buy a porn shop.

I know what your saying, but the book is better than that.
What its saying is that when you are good at something, i.e Graphic Design, many people leave their jobs to go it alone and essentially start a new business.
Then you have a business that depends on you. But you dont have a business, you have a job. And it can become the worst job in the world, cos your working for a lunatic and that lunatic is yourself.

Moral of the story? Don't be a lunatic?

...fire yourself?!

WAK..... i know for my self I DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.... not for the money and hoes that comes along with it

He means that you don't want a business to depend on you. This would result in you hating yourself at times, because you wouldn't know how to run a business (instead, you just know about the field you're interested in, and you have a 'job').
You want a business that depends on the system, not the people.

if you are ever thinking about maybe working with the client directly, i.e. not working for a company, this book is a MUST read.
most normal people don't realize how important design is; they understand how important the result is, just not the process; they think clipart will do for a logo, etc.
this book says that normal people ALSO don't realize how important basic business principles are.
anyway, a MUST READ if you're going to ever try to do any sort of business on your own; anyone who has tried and has read this book feels like its speaking straight to them.
i actually dropped my copy in the toilet at my last freelance gig, but that's another story :)

It is impreative to know about the business field.
Lets say you know GUI design but hate Programming, but if you know the basics of programming you can make your life easier and the programmers too. YOu wont be asking the basic questions about how the design is going to be used. It will add a lot of value to your work.
Same thing when learning about business, Yeah you dont want to become a business man/woman, but if you know how the top works, why the do what they do, how they take descisions, heck yeah it will add value to you and you will know how to talk to them and what they expect of you.

as a business owner, you need to understand the operation aspect as well as the creative process.
i have to disagree with jaline and the auther on the business that depends on the sytem. because the core of business always depends on people, especially for the small business. if you are building a big corporation, that's another story. but as far as the small business is concerned, people, talent is the key aspect to having successful operation.
in any case, it never hurts to read other people's opinons.

Perhaps it is an age thing. I went to a conference a few months back where a speaker said that in your twenties it seems cool to work all night to meet tight deadlines and have an office which is more like a student dorm then a business, but when you get to your thirties, have kids and some responsibility you have to mix doing it for the money with doing it for the love of it.
I don't think you can automate creativity, but having good systems in a studio can make the flow of work easier and avoid getting ripped off.
I'd recommend http://www.winwithoutpitching.co… to anyone who is self employed, go to the 'Resource Library' section and get reading.

i believe that this job is 50% design skills, 50% business skills.
