I say use Flash and XML, updating is a cinch via XML.
But what do I know, I'm just a caveman.

Oh, and Ian was awesome enough to let me take and play around with his code. Very nice.

haha, thanks fusion.

when done right you can update your site for years, take a look at http://www.joshuadavis.com/

Just take look at Ian's site:

if you set it up well enough in Flash at the beggining then it won't take any longer to maintain than a Flash site, all you'd be doing is FTPing text or XML files to your server.
Better still you could make an admin section on an obscure URL accesible by password only of course where you can change the site "live" would work in Flash and PHP for example. With ColdFusion too you could really go mental, go with Flex and it'd be gaga.
*end of plug.
*nice word Nairn, mine is Panache!

dynamic html

that's what I meant by CSS/DHTML, etc, haha. But yeah, anything that ends with 'HTML' is pretty hot.

XHTML/CSS for the content...
Flash and Images for the media.
Search engines will love you and it will be nice to look at.
Hiding stuff behind flash can end up with you being penalised in search engines, I've seen it happen.
Why I am the first person to mention XHTML in this thread??? It's the easiest updateable web technology ever.

You're a dirty whoor for mentioning 'sparkle', mito.
+1 to you! :)

I like your sister's portfolio. Looks nice.
I prefer HTML to Flash, b/c, personally, it's easier to update, and it can be as challenging or as easy as you want it to be. If you're planning to use CSS/DHTML, etc, then it'll be more complicated, but it'll be worth it.

wauestion??... I meant "question" !
- thismanslife0
If you're asking the question Flash or HTML, then i'd say HTML. IF you were tip-top in FLash, good enough to be comfortable doing your folio in it, you would. But if you're asking the wauestion, it says to me, you'd be happier in HTML.
I'm not sure if that made any sense at all :)

I think we went over this a few months ago...

i tend to favor html. to me it seems easier to update.
html makes it searchable without having to hide content, which makes the load time greater, having to pull that extra code. if you've got a high traffic site, that can add up fairly quick.
easier to use with other designers, i'd say too. and if you're just using flash for nav/etc. js should be able to take care of it.
- version30
learning xml in flash should definitely be a priority if you believe updating an html is faster than flash
done properly you should never have to open the fla again

here's how my last site turned out using HTML, MySQL and JavaScript. My sister's portfolio:

Unfits right on the money there with that system..
I first hacked together a CMS using an old guestbook that I got to feed data to a text file, then my Flash 4 files to read that..
Now, Ive got a pretty templatable CMS thing that we offer our clients as a bonus - once you get the hang of querying a database and spitting out a variable pair echo , and using LoadVars to access it, its really cool..
As for HTML/Flash, I'd say keep the imagery and stylistic elements in Flash, cause thats what its best at - whilst keeping the meat of the content in HTML, so its searchenginable - hate to say it, but a lot of 2A's portfolio has the right combination of Flash/HTML - see:
http://www.christopherlawrence.c… for example -Now, where did I put that 'Sparkle Beta...?

Well i'm not HEAVY into Flash, and I'm no vector whiz, but I sure like the effects that you can do with Flash. Meh I'll figure something out. I'll weigh the pros and cons of both methods and see which one is best suited to the task.
