Can anyone point me in the direction of some good research or documentation on type legibility. Something to convince a client enough to drop the size of their annual report bodycopy.

i've worked on about 6 or 7 annual reports this year and i'm pretty sure all my body copy was at 10 point with some 8 point here and there

I had a hard enough time convincing my girlfriend to let me use 10pt Adobe Garamond in her uni yearbook. She was always like "but the default is 12pt, so leave it 12pt because everybody uses it". So I told her "do you want to pay to print 70 pages or only 50?" So we went with 10pt.
Show your client basically any magazine or newspaper, they most likely use anything between 8-11pt. If that doesn't sway them, tell them they'll have to pay for printing all those extra pages if they go with 12pt.
