Can anyone tell me anything about this city? Things to do? Things to see? My girlfriend has been invited to a number of different conferences and while most of them are in the US, one is in Madrid and we'd really like to travel to Europe (I've only been to London once and she's never been anywhere).
We aren't huge party goers, but I wouldn't mind taking some historic tours.

there's so much really good art and architecture to see in madrid!
the prado and the reina sofia are both incredible. you can go see all the velasquez and goya and some great picasso pieces.
el escorial is a mad place that will really bring home to you the concept of tyrannical architecture.
head south to toledo (it's close) for el greco and the best marzipan in the world!

Thanks!
Also, my girlfriend can speak some spanish, but I can't. Can I still get by?

Madrid is an excellent place... paraselene is spot on. Feels more authentic than Barcelona IMO; those metropolitan, European cities seem to get more and more generic.
And if you're in any way inclined to sport take in a match at the Bernabéu as well.

yeah, you don't need to learn no spanish... when your in teh bars, just clap your hands and stomp your feet flamenco style and you should do alright.

lots of people speak english, don't worry about that! just have your girlfriend teach you a few phrases, eg:
buenos dias
por favor
gracias
no hablo espanol; habla usted ingles?things like that, so that you can be polite about not speaking spanish. people in madrid are super friendly.

Well, I assumed I should learn the basics at least.

We are indeed friendly. Some other places to go to: Parque del Retiro, Casa Labra, Lavapiés and Malasaña.

I traveled to Madrid last Christmas for the first time and stayed a few weeks. Theres plenty of art to see, and the architecture is amazing. Stayed in the Grande Via area at a few different hotels. I got both hotels thru a package deal with train tickets for a lower rate. The area was really fun at night, and there was plenty of trouble to get into. Knowing Spanish definitely helps. I love that city.
