A friend and I were talking about if you should double brand your design company or not.
In theory I am against it...just think it is two steps forward and a step backwards.
He thinks it would be a good idea to have two business cards. One that shows off your individual style...another one for "older people" that might not "get" the newer deisgns.
I think if a business card or ad can get interested in something unique they will check you out anyways.
What do you guys think? Carry around two business cards? If so...do you build two websites? To me it would get complicated and make people think they are two different designers.

daft idea.
"another one for "older people" that might not "get" the newer deisgns."
sounds like clientspeak to me and lack of experience.
- agentfour0
im probably gonna do it. Not for "older people" however.
One with all my corporate orientated work and one with my own shite, illustration, painting etc.

That would mean your business card isn't up to mark.
Back to the drawing board.

i know of a company that due that for different services.
they noted it helps if huge corporations think they are more than 4 people.

Just because you have three name cards means you've got three brands?
I've learnt something new today.

I genuinely think there is a major headache for designers/creatives. It's all too easy to get 'type-cast', getting well known for a certain style or client base.
I think it's a good idea to double, triple brand yourself, believe it or not, even in the design industry there are different markets!
For example, a bank or airline would not go for a designer who's core work is skateboard graphics or album sleeve artwork.
You need to show your diversity, but at the same time, you need a focus or 'market' to aim at.
I'd say it's something worth exploring, but excersie caution.

nice!
I think you could get away with the burning vehicle for your corp work as well. people like stuff like that

Thanks Rand...but I feel a little strange sometimes passing on a bc of a burning car, IE: to an older attorney...I usually do a quick scan of the person then flip out my wallet and decide which one.

both are great anyway

lol @Rand
"For example, a bank or airline would not go for a designer who's core work is skateboard graphics or album sleeve artwork."
But would the designer for skate graphics ever do work for an airline.
I think you confuse yourself if you have 2 brands. You know what your good at therefore you should promote yourself to the right audience. Why be a jack of all trades. Seems like you don't know what your doing yourself really.

right on dancer – know what your style is and embrace it, or if you're doing a diverse range of work, don't lock yourself in to any one style with your identity.
can't a simply-designed all typographical idenity/business card appeal to 'old' and 'cool' alike?
who am I to talk though – I am currently sans business card

I like your edginess on this, really pushing the envelope - it's exactly this kind of out of the box thinking that we need to create synergy with the cultural zeitgeist. See it all comes down to positioning in the target markets, and your idea makes it mission critical to the image conscoius consumer that we're being proactive to their needs. You'll certainly be the alpha company in this regard and lead your market base as opposed to being a herd corporation. Why graze the market when you can be the hunter?
OK, That'll be $495 for the marketing support for your dumb asss idea. Thank you.

TheTick said it all...lol
I think your portfolio is what will bring a client to you. If you have a burning car on your business card...you know they are at least going to check you out...as well as Homeland Security.
Once they are at your portfolio then they SHOULD be able to determine if you can handle their stuff or not.

i have a brand on both my left AND right butt cheeks
