Welcome to LA. Speaking as both an ex-New Yorker AND ex-Londoner, I can assure you, you've made the right choice.
Santa Monica, Brentwood, Westwood - all awesome. Venice is very cool but has slightly sketchy areas. Best thing to do - get on ye old craigslist and blogging LA and have a look and see for yourself.
