All the same - what does a home user do with 8mb+?
Chances are most webservers aren't putting out at anything near that speed anyway... so I dont really see the point.

(Oct 17 05, 07:13)- IP Television
- Streaming movies on demand
- file transfers
- high-def broadcasts
- video chatting sans *any* latencykind of naive wouldn'd you say moth?

(Oct 17 05, 07:39)No not really. Considering that most of these aren't available in the UK, and those that are handled rather well by a 2mb connection.
You watch TV on your computer?
That's just nasty.

I have 5mb/sec at home thru roadrunner and tested it yesterday and I will be damned if it wasnt at right around 5mb.
I was downloading acrobat reader and it was coming thru at 800k/sec, no shit.

I agree with mrdobolina, they do have super servers out there totally geared for quicker downloading rates.
They will not get away with cheating the public, at least not in the US. Lawyers would be all over them.

I could really see the difference between using my Wireless laptop and then going to the wired machine. The difference was amazing.

(Oct 17 05, 07:53)They do if you dont read the small print about line contention.
It seems to me...
like
owning a fast car and never being able to drive it fast.

Not sure what you mean?
It's a super fast connection, they have to install hardware in your house

(Oct 17 05, 08:25)Indeed they do, but if you think you're getting a dedicated 8mb line into your PC you are wrong. The 8mb "line" is probably shared with your neighbours. Usually about 30 of them. In theory - you could have UPTO an 8mb line, but the reality of the situation is that you will not.
My other point is - no matter how fast your incoming connection is, it counts for fuck all when my webpage, on my webserver, is outputting at 2mb MAX. So you have a fast car - but can't drive it. Or...
NT will always be slow. 8mb or not.

I sould be getting 4mb for free soon form Telewest.
Sweet.

so because your webserver can only throughput @ 2mb/sec, that means everyother service will serve at that as well? crazy.
i realize you do not like fast connections (quite clear), but i also do not think you are very familiar w/ fibre connections. if you read how the Verizon technology in the US works (which is what JazX is getting), you will see you do not "share the conection w/ 30 of your neighbors." in fact, this technology is completely line traffic independent. i for one know i couldd benefit from an 8mb connection on a daily basis.
i do not "watch t.v. on my computer" either. living in a third world contry, my computer monitor is much more suitable device for all i listed than trying to purchase a telvision set for movies, high-def, ect. i also travel extensively for my job and use my computer for many things- even telephony if you can believe it, or do you hate that technology as well? ever tried to host a 4-way conference call on a basic DSL connection? have fun...
might want to be a little less judgemental and understand the possible application of this technology before you dive in with blatant comments.

hate technology?
I work in Web Development and IT. I build and maintain webservers and have the task of serving several dozen sites from them, providing broadband access for homeworkers and the network between our London Office and Northern Office.I know plenty thanks.
If you have any other "blatant comments" please continue to make a cunt of yourself.
