how do you keep it from desaturating images?

when i save an rgb image as jpg in "save for web" mode it desaturates and colorshifts differently than when I save as jpeg from ps

I assume you are working in Adobe 1998? but I guess it doesn't matter.
To avoid this.... try converting to SRGB.
Image>Mode>Convert to Profile>SRGBI set it up as an action in my web actions folder so I can batch large amounts of images to upload to the web.
Then save for web... it should still look like you want it to.

on the 'save for web' window there's an arrow, click that an select 'use document color profile'
